Learning Outcome 2:

In my essay titled “Is Art Still Useful?” I believe I effectively used quotations to support my argument that art has been useful in history, and it will remain useful. When I was arguing that art could be used as a social awareness tool, I picked apart Titus Kaphar’s TED talk and found a quote about artistic racism and how he plans on countering it. I began to realize that his tactics can be applicable in my own writing. What he did was use paint to cover up the parts of the picture he did not want, and I used this in my writing. Instead of using Titus’s whole argument, I picked apart what I liked from it and formulated my own argument. After, I continued to use the argument and explain in further detail why I thought I was right. I think this was a perfect example of me integrating evidence and ideas of my own along with Titus’s to dismantle the argument of Rhy Southan. This strategy was definitely something I have never used, but I plan on utilizing it in the future. I think it is important to branch off from completely textual evidence and get creative with a source.
